Art & Music

Creativity belongs to us all, and each has the potential to express our personal visions in the way that calls most clearly. Every Alverno student is encouraged and challenged to develop a sense of self as a creative being, an appreciation of beauty, and an awareness of the communicating power of the arts. In this atmosphere, students’ vision and voice flourish, spurring many toward advanced study; professional work; and a passion for dance, theater, music, and the fine arts.

The visual arts program offers all students the opportunity to explore the creative process and expand their visual literacy. Beginning in Kindergarten, art activities are integrated throughout the curriculum, offering visual reinforcement of interdisciplinary topics. Students study art from diverse cultures and eras and learn about famous artists as they develop their own skills in a variety of media.

At Alverno, students develop their singing voices while beginning to study dynamics, tempo, and melodic contour. Building upon this foundation, junior high students are introduced to ensemble singing and singing in harmony, as well as music theory topics such as rhythm reading, note reading, and sight singing. In addition to opportunities to hone their vocal development skills, students also have the chance to study an instrument or play in an instrumental ensemble.
